NATURAL HAIR: Protein, To Treat or Not To Treat?

Most of us have heard of the belief in protein treatment to assist in hair growth and retention. Protein treatments help repair damage and strengthen the hair shaft, which in turn helps prevent breakage. However, so many naturalistas are a little protein sensitive, which can just contribute to more dryness to our already moisture needing hair. How can those individuals benefit from protein treatments?

1) The Preparation
Before applying the protein treatment to your hair, you will need to make sure your hair has plenty moisture and nutrition. Also, you will need properly detangle. The treatment will leave your hair hard and dry. If your hair is not detangled before the treatment you will be removing chunks of hair from your head after. Good preparations include pre-pooing, thoroughly conditioning after shampoo or deep conditioning before the treatment.

2) The Treatment
We all hear, read and see the naturals that treat the hair all day and all night. Its not necessary to get the benefits of the treatment. If you have protein sensitive hair, you're going to want to stay away from over treating your hair. I think leaving the protein treatment in your hair for about 15- 45 minutes is best.

3) The Conclusion
After washing the protein treatment out of your hair follow with conditioner. As stated before, the treatment will leave you hair dry and hard, reconditioning your hair will restore the moisture and nutrition back into your hair. This will leave your hair soft and strong.

There are protein treatments on the market that aren't very harsh and work well for individuals with protein sensitive hair. I made my own in the kitchen which is also another option.

Recipe
